Hi and welcome back.

Last night I worked at Cord Camera in Columbus and had a great time!

We shot high key again, first with two lights then with three, then we did dramatic light and Hollywood Glamour.

I have a free travel day today and will be at Dodd Camera in Cleveland tomorrow so stay tuned for images!

Come and join the fun in Cleveland: Dodd Camera

Many thanks to John Kuzniak the Expoimaging Rep in Ohio, Jen and everyone at Cord Camera for making the event a success, and to Rachel our model.

Hi and welcome back.

I’m currently on the road in Ohio and posting from the hotel.

Last night I ran a small flash workshop sponsored by Expoimaging at Dodd Camera in Cincinnati.

After a long, long day of travel with a delayed flight out of Charlotte, NC, I rolled into Dodd and knocked it out of the park.

I was able to work in the new rental studio at the location, a 40×40 room with a white cyclorama: awesome!!

Here are a few proofs from last night.  Many thanks to Hal, Ryan, and Lauren at Dodd and Katy our model for the evening.

Tonight I’ll be at Cord Camera in Columbus.  If you are in the neighborhood, stop in for the fun!

Hi and welcome back.

I’ve been busy, busy prepping for my workshops next week in Ohio.

I’m on a whirlwind tour, starting in Cincinnati and ending in Cleveland.

If you are in or near the area, swing in for a great small flash shooting event.  Always bring your camera when I hit the town for shooting and learning in fun filled environments.

We’ll be shooting key and fill, over and under beauty, and host of other looks!

Cord Camera, Columbus, October 17

Dodd Camera, Cleveloand, October 19

If you do attend and know me from another place like Youtube or Rock the Shot, make sure you say hello.

We’ll be getting creative in all three locations with area models.

Thanks and I hope to see you there!

Hi and welcome back.

After a week-and-a-half of not posting, I’m back.  I’ll be back to posting now 3-5 times per week.

For this quickie to begin my return, I was at BH Photo Event Space on Monday and did a  presentation on shooting on location.  We did a quick headshot/upper body editorial type shoot with two speedlights.

Key light: SB910, TTL mode, shoot through umbrella

Reflector: California Sunbounce Micro Mini with grip head

Hair light: SB800, TTL mode, Large Rogue Flashbender

You’ll notice that my mode has changed from Manual to TTL.  This is because I’ve been using the Phottix Odin system more and more.  This is a TTL based system that allows you to use your flashes in TTL mode, High Speed Sync, or in Manual or in any combination thereof.

I placed Katie in front of the diffusion screen in the room and used High Speed Sync with the Odin to demonstrate how well the system works.

Settings:

Nikon D3, 105 F/2 DC lens

Exposure: 1/800 @ f/4, ISO 400, WB Daylight

Both flashes in TTL mode in HSS

In TTL mode, I set the camera’s aperture, shutter, and ISO and the Odin just pushed out the right amount of light.  I’m not much of a TTL or HSS user, but I’m being convinced to change.

Here’s a finished shot from the presentation:

I had a great time with Katie and the class.

Till next time, happy high speed sync!
