Hi and welcome back.

Yesterday’s event at BH Photo Event Space on High Speed Syncrhonization for speed lights and strobes went swimmingly!

Right after the event, I headed down to the Park West Camera Club for a small presentation at the Soho Photo Gallery, 15 White St, in Soho.

What a long day!  Whew!!

Thanks to everyone at both events who attended and made the day amazing.

Here are a few proof images from BH yesterday.  May thanks to Madison for modeling and being patient.

All images Nikon D3, 105 f/2 lens:

You can see a bit of an exposure and saturation in skin tone difference as I entered the underexposed world of High Speed Sync.  I left everything as it was at capture so you can see how the system works and some of the things you need to pay attention to when shooting in HSS.

The Odin system by far beats its competition in ease of use and cost for engaging HSS quickly and easily.

Looking for a good HSS solution, the Odin works perfectly.

Till next time, happy HSS!

Hi and welcome back.

You can register here or call Victoria at Berger: (631)-264-4160

Berger Glamour

Right after, I’ll be in NYC running anther Glamour workshop on January 25.  I’ll be renting space and teaching everything you need to add glamour to your business or portfolio.  Professional NYC talent and Stylist will be on site.

For all the details, call or email: 203-641-2880 or rvh34@hotmail.com

Hope to see you there!

Now on to lighting.

For Mackenzie’s head shots, we did a few different lighting techniques and got different results.  She also changed from something less formal to a black dress; much more formal.

In the first shot, I did a simple 4 light setup using my Key in the traditional 45×45 setting with a reflector for fill.  I’ve been using more and more light lately to wrap my subject and add edge separation light.

Key and strip boxes are Hensel 500’s

Background is a 20 degree grid and Hensel 1200 Porty

Here’s the BTS:

4 Light Standard Headshot

Here’s a final:

After knocking out the basic shot in the classic style, I switched to the over and under beauty shot.  Key above is the Hensel 500 with a Phottix Luna Beauty dish and California Sunbounce Micro Mine reflector below.  Edge lights are the same as before.

BTS:

4 Light Beauty Headshot

You can see not only the difference in the light as the large soft box light is a bit softer and warmer than the second shot where the beauty dish is a bit cooler and has more contrast, especially with the silver reflected fill from below.

I prefer the look and light of the second shot for a more glamour type beauty look.  She needed images for a dance competition: Good Luck Mackenzie!!

That’s it for now.  Till next time, stay glamorous!!

Hi and welcome back.

Right before Christmas, Elizabeth came into the studio for a few updated headshots.

She chose one of my longer sittings so we had a lot of time to do a bunch of different looks and lighting scenarios.

Let’s get to it!

All shots Nikon D3, 105 f/2 DC Lens

Here’s the BTS of our initial shots.  I love the simplicity of a single light portrait with a reflector.

All strobes Hensel Integra 500’s.  Chimera 36×48 softbox as key, California Sunbounce Micro Mini as fill, Creative Light 1×4 strip softboxes for background, Hensel 20 degree grid.

Single Light Headshot 7617

Here’s a proof:

Once we knocked out the simple shot, we went to One Light High Key.  I love shooting this look against a white wall as it is so simple yet effective.  Pose your subject right against the wall, set your light and reflector in one place, and then work around your subject for multiple looks.

Single Light Against the Wall 7861

_RVH7861 copy_1Then I pulled Elizabeth off the wall and lit is separately with two strobes for the NYC/LA commercial high key look:

3 Light Strobe High Key 7777

Finally, since the weather was so nice just before the holiday, we shot a few frames outside.  I have this small alcove that is just perfect for this look.  I use the natural light coming in from above for hair and a silver reflector for bounced light as key.

Natural Light Studio Back Steps 7913

Here’s a proof from outside.  I love shooting this look.

That’s it!  Shooting with Elizabeth was a joy.  She chose the longer sitting so we had ample time to get amazing shots under a multitude of lighting setups.

Need headshots, don’t hesitate to contact me.

Till next time, if you are in the path of winter storm Hercules, happy shoveling out!!

If you are where it’s warm, I’m jealous!

Hi and welcome back.

Before I get to the last post on the workshops and demos at Unique Photo, I wanted to say something about the digital world.

Through my various events and workshops and the like, I’ve come into contact with photographers from all around the globe: and it is great!  The web is such a great way to get the word out and meet new people like:

Martin from the UK, Alican from Istanbul, and Ibrahim from Saudi Arabia.

Being able to speak to so many across such long distances is such a great pleasure!

Now on to the post.

This is the final post on Unique Photo.  I was so busy and shot so much there that I’m now just wrapping up all the techniques I showed.

For this technique, it’s 40’s Glamour.  One of my favorites with speed lights.

Rae modeled for me and looked so much like Audrey Hepburn it was just amazing!

Ok, this is a tough one to do.  You need to aim your lights precisely and then adjust exposure as you go.  I don’t use diffusion domes on my speed lights so the light is hard and fast and similar to the hotlights used in the original style photos of Joan Crawford, etc.

The key light modifier is a Small Rogue Flashbender rolled into a snoot.  Hair is a Large Rogue Flashbender rolled into a snoot.  Background is usually a Rogue 25 degree grid, but I change that up as needed.

Here’s the BTS:

3 Light 40's Glamour

I often shoot this look and adjust everything as I go.  I also set my lighting and then move around the subject, turning the subject into and out of the light so as to create dramatic shadows and hard loop lighting.

I usually finish my images in Totally Rad Actions Portrait Retouch V2, then go to B/W with Totally Rad Bitchen B/W, and then add a glamour glow in Nik Color Effex Pro.

This is a fun and dramatic lighting technique that I highly recommend you try.

Here’s a final of Rae.

That’s it for now.  Till next time, if you live in the way of Snowstorm Hercules, have fun digging out!!
