HI and welcome back.

In Philly on Saturday, running a location workshop for Expoimaging, we did four lighting looks using the Rogue Flashbender system.

The weather was gorgeous and the attendees just a great and fun crowd.  We shot guerilla style.  I had an idea and concept for the first look but every other look thereafter was done on the fly.  But, for the third look, I gave my students an assignment: find us a spot to shoot and they chose the graphic brick wall of an old restaurant.

Look one was a single SB900 with Large Rogue Flashbender, no diffusion panel, bent forward to send the light straight to our subject:

For our second look, we headed over to the parking lot under the highway.  I wanted to use the graphic look of the highway above us but there were too many cars parked there, so I set the model in front of a fence that hid a few dumpsters.

We used three speedlights:

SB900, Large Flashbender with diffusion panel as main light

SB800, Large Flashbender, no diffusion panel, bent to direct hair and shoulder light

SB800, 45 degree Rogue Grid, CTB blue filter to cool the red down a bit

The spot the group chose was in the corner of a brick building that looked like it used to be a firehouse:

SB900, Large Flashbender with diffusion panel as main light

SB800, Large Flashbender, no diffusion panel, bent to direct hair and shoulder light

SB800, 45 degree Rogue Grid, Rogue Rust colored gel to offset the reds in the back

Here’s us working on the street corner:

Last but not least we did some bounce flash in the event space, showing the ability of on camera bounce to just as good a job as off camera flash or studio lighting:

Many thanks to Gregg at Calumet, Philly for hosting the workshop event and to my sponsor in all of this, Expoimaging.

This Saturday I’m at Mack Camera, Springfield, NJ.

That’s it for now.  Till next time, happy trails!

Donating time, fun, Mutual of Omaha Breakout Swim Clinic, Nikon, off camera flash, Swimming

Hi and welcome back.

I was proud to donate my time last Sunday to my son’s recreation league swim team, the West Haven Wizards (When the high school season is out, he swims here to stay in shape).

The coaching team at the Wizards brought in the Mutual of Omaha Breakout Swim Clinic for the kids.  This is one of those great moments in sports when the athletes give back something to the kids.  The swim clinic consists of two Olympians who give the kids a pep talk, do a Q+A, and then get them in the water to teach them skills.

Brendan Hansen, who won Gold and Bronze in England this year, and Christine Magnuson, who won Bronze in China were on hand to not only teach the kids but let them know what it takes and means to be an Olympian.

And, as a bonus, they brought their medals with them:

They got together with the kids for a photo op, taken by me, and to have their shirts signed:

Then they all got into the water and Brendan and Christine gave the kids pointers on technique to give them an edge in the pool:
Last but not least, as I am a teacher of Off Camera Flash, here’s my setup for the shots with the kids:
Nikon SB910, reflective umbrella as fill against the strong window light
One of the great things about being a photographer is the people you meet.  I met two Olympians who graciously gave of themselves to help these kids learn techniques that will help them become more competitive.
Was it cool?  You Bet!!
Many thanks to Mutual of Omaha’s Breakout Swim Clinic, Brendan Hansen, Christine Magnuson, and the entire West Haven Wizards staff and team for hosting such a great and fun event for the kids.
That’s it for now.  Till next time, happy swimming!

Hi and welcome back!

I’m headed to Philly this Saturday for another OCF shooting event at Calumet Photo. Our model is Betty and the day is going to be great!

We’ll work from one light to three and really get our OCF creative juices flowing. If attendance hits the mark at 24, I may have a second model so we can do a lot of great and crazy fun stuff.

In the Philly area, join in the fun: Calumet Philly
