Lollipop Shoot

26 Sunday Sep 2010

Hi and welcome back.

Yesterday was the lollipop themed Meetup workshop.  We got some fantastic images of our model Andrea in crazy cool makeup and styling by Moda here in Milford.

Many thanks to all involved: Renee and Vanessa at Moda, Andrea our model, and Laurie Tomaszek for helping with prop styling.

Take a look at our work.  All of these shots were taken with off camera flash.  We used a few different lighting setups to achieve different results: over and under with a SB900 and reflector for fill, a Westcott 28″ Apollo Softbox, and a single SB900 at full power from about 20 feet away for direct, contrasty light.

Enjoy:

Joe McNally Seminar in Hartford

Hi and welcome back,

About a week-and-a-half ago I attended the Joe McNally lighting seminar in Hartford.  It was cool to actually see him work and meet him personally: I did the starstruck photographer thing and unashamedly walked up to him and introduced myself.  He is a pleasure to speak to and a joy to watch in action.

Here is a shot of me courtesy of Greg Peele at the seminar.  I got there mighty early to get that seat front and center.

Look for upcoming posts on today’s Candy Land, lollipop meetup workshop.

Lightpainting

24 Friday Sep 2010

Hi and welcome back.

As you may or may not know, I teach Digital Photography at the Adult Ed level in Milford.  I love teaching adults as they have the wherewithal and eagerness to learn all aspects of the medium.

Last night was my advanced digital class, and I took them outside to lightpaint.  If you are unfamiliar with this technique, you just set a long exposure in a dark area and bring out the highlights with a flashlight.  For these photos I used a Brinkman 2 million candlepower light to illuminate the building from different angles.

This is Foran H.S. in Milford last night.  The first exposure was our initial test exposure, the second exposure is the lightpainting technique.   In the first set of photos, I’m lightpainting from behind the new addition; in the second set of photos, I’m lightpainting from in front at the camera angle of view.

You can also take multiple exposures and then in Photoshop merge them to make a composite.  I used a little dodging and burning in the trees and foreground to add just a touch of interest and open the shadows a bit.

Lightpainting is a fun and cool technique.  Don’t get discouraged if it takes more than a few frames to get some decent shots.  It is a total trial and error technique.

For tomorrow, Candy Land.  Want to join us as our model gets creative hair and makeup and is surrounded by candy props, just drop me a line: rvh34@hotmail.com

That’s it for now.  Till next time Happy Shooting!

A Trip to Candy Land!!

22 Wednesday Sep 2010

Hi and welcome back.

In an effort to improve my online presence, I’ll be posting on my newly designed blog/website.  I’ll be updating it frequently with still photos and behind-the-scenes videos.  Check out the welcome video on the About page: bear with me as this is my first time doing this!

For today, I’m running a concept fashion shoot workshop this Saturday.  Moda hair salon is transforming our model with hair, colorful makeup, and long, long eyelashes.

The original idea for the shoot was lollipops, but as it evolved over time, my friend Laurie was able to get her friend to donate props from a Candy themed school event.  Take a look at the props; they are amazing and all handmade!

Interested in the shoot, just drop me a line: 203-641-2880 or rvh34@hotmail.com.  It is this Saturday from 12-3.

Hi Everyone and Welcome Back!

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of shooting Jaime and Jon’s engagement photos.  We met at Anchor Beach in Milford and spent a wonderful afternoon together.

I shot most of these with natural light.  A few with direct flash: Nikon D3, FEC -2 to -3.  The last two are off camera flash: SB900, Photoflex shoot through umbrella, Pocket Wizards.

I can’t wait to shoot their wedding next year!

Enjoy.
