Hi and welcome back.

Last night I headed to Photo Uno in NYC to teach a class on Rogue Flashbenders.

It was awesome.  If you are in NYC, Photo Uno is an independent photography school located on East 46th St, about a 5 minute walk from Grand Central Station.

They have great classes and a small rental studio.  I love finding these spots as usually the rental studios are all downtown.  With a rental so close to Grand Central, look for future workshops to be held there.

Photo Uno

Many thanks to Expoimaging for sponsoring the event, Patricia and Francisco at Photo Uno for hosting, and Laura Dewey for modeling as I taught.

Here’s a shot of yours truly working, sent by friend and fellow photog, Charles Chessler:

Till next time, happy shooting!

Hi and welcome back.

On Sunday, January 10, I’ll be running a beauty headshot workshop.  The beauty headshot is one of my absolute favorite things to shoot.

We’ll be shooting two different beauty looks: one clean and one with a bit harder, more direct light and creative makeup.

I’ll show you how to get amazing results with just a few speed lights and modifiers.

Here are the details:

Location: Studio 52 North, Middletown, CT

Date: January 10, 2016

Time: 12-3

Looks: First look is clean beauty, second look is creative beauty with creative makeup

Cost: $160.00, use the link or the Paypal link on top of the page.

Our first look is clean beauty using:

Phottix Luna Beauty Dish

Our second look is totally creative using:

Rogue Grids

Rogue XL Pro with the strip grid

Our model for the day is Laina:

Screen Shot 2015-12-20 at 11.50.18 AM

This workshop will run slightly differently.  Laina will be in hair and makeup from 11-12 so we can shoot from 12-1.  After the first look and hour of shooting, she’ll head back into styling for creative makeup and hair while we set up the second set of lights.  The second look is a very specific lighting, so we’ll all engage in setting it up to shoot and learn how to do it.

Don’t forget, all my workshops are shooting workshops so don’t forget your camera, lenses, batteries, and cards to shoot, shoot, shoot, this amazing look.

Any questions, email or call:

I hope to see you there!

Triangle Lighting with Speedlights

OCF, off camera flash, Off Camera flash workshops, Phottix, Phottix Ares, Phottix Mitros, Portrait Lighting, Ring Light, Ring Lighting, Rogue Flashbender 2, Rogue XL Pro, Triangle Light

Hi and welcome back.

I happened across triangle lighting for headshots about 4 years ago.  I started using it in place of a ring light.  Why carry around a ring light and all that comes with it when instead I can use and control 3 lights individually and get nearly the same result.

Shooting with Megan, I decided on using this look to get great, smooth, even light on her face.

The key to this setup is getting your lights set in a triangle and then setting the output to the same power level.  I usually use Manual Mode at 1/8 power to give me an exposure of about 1/200 at f/7.1 to 8 depending on skin tone.

The trump card here is the bottom light.  Sometimes, depending on the shape of the face, you need to turn the light a bit downward to avoid up shadows or turn the power down a bit so the up shadows are no longer seen.

I use three Rogue Flashbender 2’s with diffusion panels for that soft yet contrasty light.

Here I have 2 Phottix Odins, 1 SB910, all triggered by Phottix Ares.

Here is a proof image.  Notice the shape of the catchlights in her eyes:

_RVH2265Here is the setup.

Three lights in triangular formation, each set to the same power setting, Rogue Flashbender 2 XL Pro’s with diffusion panels.

_RVH2255 _RVH2256Want a ring light look without the expense and trouble of a ring light?  Then this setup is a great alternative.

That’s it for now.

Till next time, happy shooting.

Hi and welcome back.

I returned home from LA and the Big Photo Show and a full day of jet lag only to be off tomorrow morning to the Henry’s Exposure Show in Toronto.  Whew, what a week!

Henry’s

Henry’s is a Canadian base retailer with over 20 stores in the Eastern half of the country.  I’m proud go be honored to speak at the Exposure show, which for those of you on the East Coast of the US would compare to the Photoplus Expo in NYC.

This year all three presentations are on small flash photography, and I’m looking forward to it.

Here are a few proofs from The Big Photo Show last weekend in LA.  Many, many thanks to everyone at Expoimaging, Brandi Carlos the HMUA, and of course Elizabeth Michelle for being a wonderful model for the two days.

This event turned into the gel event, with a great deal of shots taken with Rogue Gels to demonstrate the versatility of the kit and how you can change the look of an image with added color.

Enjoy and till next time, happy shooting!  Oh, maybe I’ll see you in Toronto, Eh!

Hi and welcome back.

Yesterday’s event at BH Photo Event Space on High Speed Syncrhonization for speed lights and strobes went swimmingly!

Right after the event, I headed down to the Park West Camera Club for a small presentation at the Soho Photo Gallery, 15 White St, in Soho.

What a long day!  Whew!!

Thanks to everyone at both events who attended and made the day amazing.

Here are a few proof images from BH yesterday.  May thanks to Madison for modeling and being patient.

All images Nikon D3, 105 f/2 lens:

Exposure: 1/8,000 @ f/2, ISO 400

You can see a bit of an exposure and saturation in skin tone difference as I entered the underexposed world of High Speed Sync.  I left everything as it was at capture so you can see how the system works and some of the things you need to pay attention to when shooting in HSS.

The Odin system by far beats its competition in ease of use and cost for engaging HSS quickly and easily.

Looking for a good HSS solution, the Odin works perfectly.

Till next time, happy HSS!

Hi and welcome back.

Now it’s time to say goodbye to 2013 and usher in the New Year.

I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me and was a client, attended any workshops or presentations this year, or followed the blog.

Along with regular shooting, the workshop schedule for 2013 got crazy with stops in CA, PA, MA, NYC, NJ, MD, VA, OH, WI, LI, Toronto, and WPPI in Las Vegas.

2014 will prove to be a bit different.  With the workshop schedule actually expanding!

Starting this Saturday with a Glamour workshop, BH Photo on January 13, Berger Camera on January 17 and 18 for Glamour, and ending the month at Mystic Seminars.

Glamour Workshop

Berger Camera

BH Event Space

Mystic Seminars

Look for more travel workshops heading South to Florida, Atlanta, Nashville, with a possible stop in England this Summer!

The books, blog, and videos have done well, especially the BH Youtube Videos, with the Off Camera Flash Video reaching over 86,000 views!

BH OCF Video

Photographic Lighting

One Speedlight, 16 Looks

2014 is going to be great.  I can’t wait to get started.

But, not to be outdone, let’s have one last lighting post for 2013.

Shooting again at Unique Photo, whew, I was busy, busy that weekend!

I decided to shoot some High Speed Synchronization to show how easy it is to do with the Phottix Odin System.  I sold my Pocket Wizard Flexes and Radio Poppers because they just can’t attain the ease of use and convenience of the Odin System.

Shooting with Tammie in the demo station, I cranked up my shutter speed to 1/800 of a second and got this simple headshot while just working in TTL mode with two flashes.

Nikon D3, 105 f/2 DC

1/800 @ f/5.6, ISO 200, WB Daylight

Here’s the BTS.

XL Pro Key and Edge

Here’s a final shot at 1/800:

_RVH7159Then, of course, went to the two light commercial look.  I shot this look prior to the previous post where I did it with a single strobe.

Here’s the BTS:

Over and under commercial

And here’s a final:

_RVH7170This is a simple two light setup.  But pay strict attention to your fill light.  It needs to be at least 2-3 stops less than the key to keep the fill accurate and only open the shadows just a touch.  You don’t want the fill to overpower the key; you just want a hint of light to fill everything in completely.

Many thanks to Tammie for being a sport!

That’s it for now.  I hope to meet a lot of new faces in 2014 around the world.

Enjoy the New Year celebration and be safe!  If it is already 2014 where you are, Happy New Year!!!

Hi and welcome back.

Last week I was presenting at BH Photo Event Space on mixing speedlights and strobe lights.

If you’ve never heard of BH Event Space, you need to check it out.  It is an educational center in the middle of the BH Superstore in NYC.  It holds about 70-80 attendees and the organizers, David, Debbie, Shoshona, and videographer Matthew, create a unique experience where you can see and meet all different photographers for free.  Yes, it’s free!

Here’s a link: BH Event Space

Here are a few photos with some BTS drawings.  I use a great site called: The Online Diagram Creator to build BTS images and save them as jpegs for later use.  This is especially useful if you can’t take BTS shots.

Link: Online Diagram Creator

Here are the shots and BTS.  Many thanks to Cori for modeling for this event.

My gear for the event:

Nikon SB910 and 800

Rogue Flashbender XL Pro

Rogue Gels

Hensel Integra 500 WS Freemask Strobe

My third look:

And the final look:

The BH Event Space is a great place to learn, see, and even meet some of the top names in the country involved in photography.

I’m honored to be able to teach and present there and be counted among many of the top names that present at BH.

Check them out and I’ll be back there on January 13: High Speed Sync

Till next time, happy shooting!!

Hi and welcome back.

I’m currently on the road in Ohio and posting from the hotel.

Last night I ran a small flash workshop sponsored by Expoimaging at Dodd Camera in Cincinnati.

After a long, long day of travel with a delayed flight out of Charlotte, NC, I rolled into Dodd and knocked it out of the park.

I was able to work in the new rental studio at the location, a 40×40 room with a white cyclorama: awesome!!

Here are a few proofs from last night.  Many thanks to Hal, Ryan, and Lauren at Dodd and Katy our model for the evening.

Tonight I’ll be at Cord Camera in Columbus.  If you are in the neighborhood, stop in for the fun!
