Hi and welcome back.

In the previous post I used a two light setup, now let’s look at a one light commercial style setup.

You can do this with speedlight or strobe light.  Here I used a Hensel Integra.  If you use speedlight, be careful of exposure as the light is a bit harsher than strobe especially when shooting bare head.

Here is the BTS diagram:

Hensel directHere are a few proofs from the shoot.

If you look closely, you’ll see how the shadows drop on the right for Melanie and to the left for Claire (the redhead).  I kept the light in the same position but moved to either side of it to create different shadow effects.  The closer your subject is to the backdrop, the shorter the shadow; the further from the backdrop, the longer the shadow.  Swap sides, and it falls on different sides.

These shots are straight out of the camera, no retouching at all.  At this point I’d select my final and get to work in Photoshop.

This is a fun commercial look that is easy to execute with a barehead speedlight or strobe.  I prefer strobes as the light quality seems to be a bit softer.

Till next time, learn to shoot on white!!

Hi and welcome back.

Here’s a final from Saturday’s glamour workshop at Peter Fidalgo’s studio in Mass.

I used 5 lights to achieve this shot.  You have to remember that every time you add light you add dimension to the image and also add separation from foreground to background.

In this shot, we used 5 strobes to literally wrap the model in light from all sides, enabling me to get key, hair, edge, and background lighting for the final shot.

Nikon D3, 105 f/2 DC lens

1/200 @ f/10, ISO 200, WB Daylight

The image was finished with Totally Rad Actions Portrait Retouch V2.

Here’s the final:

And here’s the BTS with the explanation of lighting:

Key: Hensel Integra 500, Phottix Luna Beauty Dish with sock

Reflector: California Sunbounce Sun Mover, silver side

Hair: Hensel Porty 1200 with Hensel kit 18×26 soft box

Edge: 2 Hensel Integra 500’s with Creative Light 1×4 strip boxes

Background: Alien Bee 800 with homemade Cinefoil snoot

_RVH6511 _RVH6513

This is an advanced setup that you can also do with speedlights.  One of my attendees, Ed Daly, ask that question.

If I needed to do this shot with small flashes, here’s how I’d set it up:

Key: Phottix Luna with diffusion sock and SB910

Reflector: California Sunbounce Sun Mover, silver side

Hair: Lastolite 24×24 Ezybox with SB800, or Westcott Strip, or Rogue Flashbender

Edge: 2 Rogue XL Pro’s in strip box format with SB800’s

Backlight: Rogue 16 degree grid with SB800

Just swap out the strobes for speedlights and have fun.

That’s it for now.  Till next time, it’s all about glamour!

Hi and welcome back.

For the first time in years, Thanksgiving and Hanukkah fall on the same day.  To all my friends, followers, workshop and presentation attendees, sponsors, and anyone who follows this blog or loves photography, enjoy the holiday season!

Be safe, happy, among family and friends, and for today: EAT WAY TOO MUCH!!

Now for a quick lighting lesson and off to my family’s for dinner.

Before I forget too, good luck Kate, Julia, Jen, and Sarah at the 5K race today!

Totally Rad Actions is having a Black Friday Sale on all of its products.  As you may already know, I’m a huge fan of Totally Rad and use their Portrait Retouch V2 and Rad Lab.

35% Off Coupon Codes for Totally Rad Sale: 1434rhstudios and BLACKFRIDAY2013

Ok, on to lighting.

One of the techniques i’ve grown very fond of over the last few months is the collapsed umbrella.  Why spend on a  larger light source, like a strip softbox, when you probably own it already?

Simple attach a reflective umbrella to a light and then collapse it over the light source to create a tight spread of light.  Simple, easy, effective, and inexpensive.

Here is an example.

Gear:

Hensel Integra 500 monolights

Hensel umbrellas that came in the kit

California Sunbounce Sun Mover attached to a Matthews Hollywood Grip Arm

That’s it for now.

Enjoy your holiday season!

Till next time, happy collapsing!
