Hi and welcome back.

If you are attending the Headshot Workshop at Theia Studios this Saturday, it is a shooting workshop.

Bring your camera, batteries, clean cards, lenses, and everything you need to shoot.  I supply the lights, modifiers, and radio triggers.  After I set the look, you get to shoot frames and learn how to do the look.

I live by this little mantra:

Tell me and I forget

Teach me and I remember

Involve me and I learn

Our model is Amanda:

I’ll teach and you’ll shoot with speed lights these looks:

Corporate

Beauty

Actor

Model

Creative

Gels

Glamour

40’s Hollywood Glamour

This is a fun and interactive event where you get to shoot and learn.  Don’t forget your camera kit and shoot, shoot, shoot this Saturday.

I hope to see you there with your cameras!

Hi and welcome back.

I’m attaching one proof image from each lighting look we did last Saturday.  The day was a success not only due to the lighting but due to Ely, our model!

So I taught how to use one light in a multitude of different ways.

Here is my gear list:

Nikon Sb910, with Nikon SD9 battery pack

Phottix Ares Triggers

Small Rogue Flashbender

Photoflex 45″ Convertible Umbrella

Lastolite Tri Grip silver/white reflector

Westcott Omega reflector

And that is it!

We got great results with just this gear, take a look:

And finally, full body with a shoot through umbrella:

That is all the looks we did with the amazing Ely and one light source and a reflector.

Keep an eye out for upcoming workshops soon as my travel schedule is getting set now.

Thanks and till next time, happy shooting!

CT Headshot Photographer, Headshot Photographer, Nkon, off camera flash, Off camera flash workshop, Photoflex, SB910, Umbrella

Hi and welcome back.

If you are unable to attend the “Whole Kit and Caboodle” lighting presentation at BH Photo on August 12, I’m running a shooting workshop in my studio based on this presentation.

BH Event Space Whole Kit and Caboodle

We’ll shoot a professional model using all the tips, tricks, and techniques I show during the presentation.

If you own strobe lights but don’t really use them or need a refresher or are considering buying them, let me show you how to get amazing results with just the gear you are given in the kit.  Why spend more money on more gear when you don’t really need to?

This is a workshop for all levels.

Where: Studio, 233 Boston Post Rd, Orange, CT

When: August 17, 12-3

Cost: $100.00

Model Supplied

Maybe I’ll see you there!

Onto the Post:

For the next few days we are going to be looking at the versatile umbrella.

I love, love umbrellas.  Why get larger, more expensive light modifiers when you can do so much with just an umbrella?

If you are looking to get an umbrella, always get one that’s Convertible as these umbrellas allow you to use them reflective style or shoot through style.

In the BTS shot below, you can see the atypical 45 x 45 portrait light setup using a reflective umbrella:

_RVH5028In this shot, I have a nice cool contrasty light on my subject that really brings out her gold jacket.

Gear:

  • Manfrotto 1052 BAC Lightstand
  • SB910 with SD9 Battery Pack
  • Photoflex 45″ Convertible Umbrella
  • Pocket Wizard Plus III

Exposure here was: 1/125 @ f/5.6, ISO 200, WB Daylight

Here’s a final using just one light:

_RVH5013The light is cool and has a nice touch of contrast to it.

The umbrella, one of the best lighting tools you can own.

That’s it for now.  Till next time, enjoy Summer!

Sticking with the Shoot Through Umbrella Today

30 Tuesday Jul 2013

CT Commercial Photographer, CT Headshot Photographer, CT Photographer, Headshot Photographer, Nikon, OCF, off camera flash, Off camera flash workshop, Photoflex Umbrella, Shoot Through Umbrella

Hi and welcome back.

For today’s post on off camera flash, we are going to stick with the shoot through umbrella.

I love the shoot through umbrella.  It’s compact when folded, opens to give gorgeous soft light, and is only about $30.00 to replace if it gets broken.

For today’s post, we’ll look at the shoot through umbrella as a direct source of light.

In the BTS shot, I have my speedlight high and above me and pointing directly to the model on a white seamless paper backdrop.  I love getting my light high and above as this takes you away from the stock standard and sometimes boring 45 x 45 key light placement.

The light here is flat but the model is not flatly lit.  You can still see shadow detail on her skin and a soft, soft drop shadow on the backdrop.  I pulled her off the backdrop about a foot or so to get this nice, easy, commercial style look.

_RVH8247Gear list:

  • Manfrottto 1052 BAC Lightstand
  • Lumopro LP633 umbrella bracket
  • Photoflex 45″ Convertible Umbrella
  • SB800, SD8A battery Pack
  • Pocket Wizard Plus II’s

Exposure: 1/125 @ f/5.6, ISO 320, WB Daylight.

You’ll notice the ISO got a bit of a bump up.  Not wanting to sacrifice shutter speed or depth of field, I sent the ISO up 2/3 of a stop in order to get a good exposure in this location.

Here’s a final from the shoot.  Look at how the light is flat on her face but there is still significant shadow detail on her cheeks and under her chin.

_RVH8252This is a simple commercial style look you can do just about anywhere.

Get your light source high and above your subject to completely change how the light interacts and you’ll change your work.

That’s it for now.  Till next time, happy lighting.
