Hi and welcome back.

For today, let’s take a look at simple bounce flash off the camera.

Whether on the camera or off the camera, bounce flash is an effective and simple way to light your subject.

With off camera flash, it’s as simple as just aiming your speedlight toward the wall/ceiling intersection and firing away.  Then adjust your exposure to your need.  The great thing about this technique is that you can push your light into the corner of the room and effectively light a large area.

In the BTS shot, I have a Rogue Flashbender mounted to my flash in order to keep the light moving up toward the ceiling.

_RVH0176I simply placed my light close to the wall and bounced it up and around Bernadette.  With just a bit of retouching in post production, I got a great, fun, well-lit shot with just one speedlight.

Gear:

  • Manfrotto 1052 BAC Lightstand
  • Matthews 40″ Hollywood Grip Arm
  • Lumopro LP633 umbrella bracket
  • Nissin Di 866 with battery pack
  • Large Rogue Flashbender

Exposure: 1/1215 @ f/5.6, ISO 500, WB Daylight

In the final, I had Bernadette look toward the light source for this simply lit shot.

_RVH0173Bouncing your flash is a simple and effective way to light your subject without a lot of gear.  With just a few minutes in Photoshop, the final is just right.

That’s it for now.  Till next time, keep on bouncin’.

Hi and welcome back!

Last Saturday’s event at Hunt’s photo went swimmingly!

Rebecca modeled for me and we just had a blast in the presentation space.

This was also the first time I used the new presentation format:

  • 30 minute intro
  • 2 hours shooting and showing technique
  • 30 minute attendee shooting: all attendees now get to shoot a few frames with the model

It went off without a hitch and Rebecca was just a blast to work with.

Here’s a link to upcoming events, join in if you can:

Here are a few shots from the day using all small flashes:
